“Avant-garde. This book began with this term to characterize the change occurring in the marketing world, and its subsequent impact on firms, consumers, and other stakeholders (Transformative Marketing , 2024)”.

I recently delved into “Transformative Marketing” book by marketing luminaries V. Kumar and Philip Kotler. For over a decade, I’ve closely followed V. Kumar’s work in customer analytics. Coupled with the universally recognized expertise of Philip Kotler, this collaboration is a dream team for marketing. Their newly released book in June 2024 is a groundbreaking masterpiece that brilliantly illuminates the transformative power of modern technology on marketing.

Philip Kotler has been at the forefront of marketing evolution, pioneering concepts from product-centric Marketing 1.0 to human-centric Marketing 3.0, each aligned with technological advancements. Now, with Kotler and Kumar, Marketing 5.0, or Transformative Marketing, emerges. This new paradigm leverages New Age Technologies (NAT), encompassing AI, ML, Gen AI, IoT, Robotics, Metaverse, and Blockchain, to redefine the marketing landscape.

Transformative Marketing is a radical departure from traditional approaches. It centers on using NAT and deep human understanding to revolutionize business-customer interactions. The goal is to create highly personalized, immersive experiences that deliver exceptional value, fostering customer loyalty and driving profits while benefiting all stakeholders.

The core of Transformative Marketing lies in three interconnected pillars: predictive, contextual, and augmented marketing. The authors provide a strategic blueprint for marketers based on these concepts. While personalization is a standout application, it’s evident that it will become increasingly central to business strategy with the aid of New Age Technologies. This book is a valuable resource, offering practical examples, up-to-date research, and customer insights. A conceptual framework for this innovative marketing approach is outlined below.

The book’s most compelling aspect for me is its exploration of how New Age Technologies can revolutionize traditional marketing mix elements like product, price, and place. This perspective highlights immense potential for growth in sectors such as banking and loyalty programs. To successfully implement these transformative marketing strategies, the authors emphasize the critical need for agile marketing to keep pace with the rapidly evolving customer landscape.

In summary, personalized and tailored offerings will dominate the marketing landscape in the future. This era of experimentation has been aptly termed “avant-garde.” While these innovations hold immense promise, the ultimate impact on customer satisfaction remains uncertain. There’s a risk of overstepping boundaries and creating an unsettling experience which is called uncanny valley…
